WHAT IS KIDNEY CANCER?
The kidneys are two organs situated in the abdomen, that are involved in clearing the blood of toxic metabolites and producing urine. When a tumor develops in this organ, its called kidney cancer.
IS KIDNEY CANCER COMMON IN DELHI NCR
Unfortunately, kidney cancer is increasing in Delhi and NCR. There are many reasons for this sudden rise. One maybe increased habit of active and passive smoking in Delhi and Gurgaon. Though not scientifically proven, it is my belief that hectic lifestyle and work stress is contributing. Obesity and diet are debatable causes. Prevention is the key, but if one is unfortunate to be diagnosed with kidney cancer in Delhi and Gurgaon, he or she requires immediate treatment.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF KIDNEY CANCER?
Kidney cancer is a cancer that creeps up unexpectedly. It is mostly detected when the patient would get a routine ultrasound or during a health checkup.
But some symptoms may lead to a diagnosis.
The common symptoms of kidney cancer are
- Hematuria or Blood in urine – Read my article on hematuria here.
- Flank pain or pain in back
- Continuous mild fever
- Headache due to high BP
- Recent onset hypertension
- Swelling in the scrotum
Though these symptoms are non specific, your doctor may order some tests to detect the disease on time.
WHAT ARE THE TESTS FOR DETECTING KIDNEY TUMOR?
Your urologist will like to order some tests before he can diagnose and proceed to treat your kidney tumor.
In Delhi, Gurgaon and NCR, I am qualified to evaluate and interpret these tests to diagnose your kidney cancer.
The tests needed are-
- Contrast Enhanced CT of the abdomen and Chest – Kidney cancer is eminently diagnosed by a CECT scan. A cect provides all the necessary information needed to diagnose and treat kidney tumors.
- MRI -In patients not able to undergo a CECT, MRI is a valid choice and almost as good. Though CECT is better
- Contrast Ultrasound – In some difficult cases, contrast ultrasound may help your urologist to reach a diagnosis.
- PET-CT- As of now PET CT is not routinely recommended, but it has an emerging role, especially in advanced kidney cancer.
IS BIOPSY FROM KIDNEY CANCER REQUIRED?
Ideally speaking, biopsy from kidney cancer is not required. Because it is painful, can give false reports and even lead to your disease spreading. But in certain cases, it is prudent to biopsy the lesion. It requires careful evaluation by your urologist.

BEST PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY DELHI-PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY GURGAON
WHAT IS PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY?
Partial nephrectomy is the emerging gold standard for management of kidney cancer worldwide. It is the new standard of care for small kidney tumors, or kidney tumors less than 4 cm in size.
In this surgery, instead of removing the entire kidney, only the kidney tumor is removed, hence preserving the kidney.
INDICATIONS OF PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY
- Small renal masses – less than 4 cm
- Single kidney – patients with only one kidney
- Multiple tumors
- Tumors in both kidneys
- Patient choice
- Patient at risk of kidney failure in the future – Diabetics and hypertensives
ADVANTAGES OF PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY
- Saves the kidney – tomorrow if you lose the other kidney, you will have a back up
- Prevents damage to other kidney – It is theorized that removal of one kidney puts extra stress on the other kidney, and may lead to kidney failure.
DISADVANTAGES OF PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY
- More blood loss
- Technically demanding procedure
- Longer operating time
- Higher complications – like urine leak, fever etc
But with refinement of technique, partial nephrectomy is almost equivalent to radical nephrectomy today.
APPROACHES TO PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY
- OPEN PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY – Using a subcostal incision, under vision the tumor is removed carefully
- ROBOTIC PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY – Emerging gold standard
- LAPAROSCOPIC PARTIAL NEPHRECTOMY – Losing to robotics

WHAT IS RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY?
Radical Nephrectomy is a urooncological surgery procedure in which the diseased kidney is removed en tota with all its draining lymphatics. This ensures complete disease removal along with all ways for kidney cancer to spread.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY?
Radical nephrectomy is the gold standard procedure for management of kidney tumors. Its advantages are
- Complete kidney cancer removal
- Minimal risk of recurrence
- early recovery
- Less Complications
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY?
The disadvantages of radical nephrectomy are that it entails complete removal of the kidney. If you are diabetic or hypertensive and at risk of loss to another kidney, this places you at a risk of kidney failure. And there is always a small risk of getting cancer in the other kidney too.
The solution to this partial nephrectomy or nephron sparing surgery.
OPEN RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY OR LAPAROSCOPIC RADICAL NEPHRECTOMY?
Open Radical Nephrectomy is the removal of the kidney via an incision in the flank or below the chest (subcostal). It is necessary for larger or bulky kidney tumors. But it leaves a large scar, is a little more painful and may cause hernia later.
Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is the standard of care today. Via two small incisions and 5 mm pfannensteil incision the kidney can be delivered with minimal scarring and excellent pain relief.
The choice of approach depends on the size of the kidney tumor, and is best decided by your urologist. Do not choose laparoscopic when not indicated as it can compromise results.
